IFAD and FAO just published a new policy brief on low carbon and resilient livestock development in Kyrgyzstan.
The two Agencies partnered with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the European Space Agency to assess how livestock is key in adapting to Climate Change in Kyrgyzstan.
The main outcomes of the policy brief are summarised as follows:
- Pasture conditions are worse than at the beginning of the century due to unsustainable management practices, exacerbated by climate change;
- Further efforts are needed to strengthen sustainable pasture a nd herd management, which will affect the milk and meat production without increasing the number of livestock and its impact on GHG emissions;
- GHG emissions can be ultimately reduced by improving the herd structure, overall animal health and feed quality.
