Introduction to Marine Environment & Blue Economy

The video developed by the Marine Environment and Blue Economy thematic activity emphasises the critical role of Earth’s oceans in providing jobs, food, and sustainable economic growth, covering more than two-thirds of the planet. Oceans regulate the climate, absorb greenhouse gases, produce oxygen, and support biodiversity, crucial for coastal and urban communities. The blue economy generates about $2.3 trillion annually, significantly contributing to the GDP of many nations, with over three billion people relying on the ocean for livelihoods and food security.

Despite their importance, oceans face crises from overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, invasive species, coastal erosion, and climate change. The “GDA AID Marine Environment & Blue Economy” thematic activity, funded by the European Space Agency and aligned with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, aims to address these issues. The activity focuses on improved fisheries governance, pollution management, ocean sector enhancement, and integrated seascape management, utilising satellites to monitor marine ecosystems.

Targeting developing nations such as Tunisia, Maldives, Caribbean, Indonesia, and more, the initiative promises value-adding products and services. Managed by Planetek Italia and various expert partners, the thematic activity represents a commitment to overcoming challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for the oceans.
